Claude Pro vs Max: which plan do you need?

By Tried AI Tools · Published · Updated

Short answer

Claude Pro costs $20 a month ($17 a month billed yearly) and suits most people. Max costs $100 a month for five times Pro's usage per session, or $200 for twenty times, and adds priority access plus up to half of your weekly usage on Anthropic's top Fable models, which Pro doesn't include. Upgrade only if you keep hitting Pro's limits, usually from heavy Claude Code use.

Claude has one standard paid plan, Pro, and two heavier Max plans. The right one depends almost entirely on how often you hit Pro's limits. This guide is based on Claude's pricing page and Anthropic's help center, checked on the date above. Limits change, so check your account's usage page for current numbers.

How the limits work

Anthropic's help article on usage and length limits describes two limits on every paid plan:

Max plans also have a separate weekly limit for Fable models. Long conversations, large files and the most capable models use up your allowance faster than short chats.

Claude Code shares the same pool. Anthropic's Claude Code help article says activity in Claude and Claude Code counts against the same limits. That's the main reason people upgrade: a few long coding sessions can use up a Pro week. In 2026 Anthropic announced that it was doubling Claude Code's five-hour limits on Pro and Max and removing the peak-hours reduction on those plans.

Hitting a limit doesn't have to stop you. With usage credits turned on, you pay for extra usage instead of waiting for the reset. For occasional overruns, that's often cheaper than moving to Max.

What Max adds besides more usage

Max's monthly API credits can't be spent in Claude Code or the Claude apps, according to Anthropic's help center.

Which plan should you pick?

Stay on Pro if:

Choose Max 5x if:

Choose Max 20x only if Max 5x still runs out. It's priced for people who use Claude as a full-time work tool, often running coding agents for long stretches.

A quick way to decide

  1. Use Pro for two normal weeks and note how often you hit a limit, and whether it's the session or the weekly one.
  2. If you rarely hit one, stay on Pro.
  3. If you mostly hit the session limit late in a long sitting, try usage credits first.
  4. If you hit the weekly limit most weeks, or you want Fable for daily work, move to Max 5x and check your usage page after a week.

Frequently asked questions

How much is Claude Max?

Max 5x is $100 a month and Max 20x is $200 a month, according to Claude's pricing page. Anthropic says it doesn't offer standard discounts on individual plans.

Is Claude Max unlimited?

No. Max raises Pro's limits by 5x or 20x per five-hour session, but it still has a session limit, a weekly limit and a separate weekly limit for Fable models.

Does Claude Code use my Pro or Max limits?

Yes. Anthropic says the limits are shared across Claude and Claude Code, so coding sessions and chats draw from the same pool.

Can I keep using Claude after hitting my limit?

Yes, if you turn on usage credits. They let Pro and Max subscribers pay for extra usage after reaching the session or weekly limit, instead of waiting for it to reset.
