Google Gemini is the best value if you live in Gmail and Docs (paid plans from $4.99 a month). Perplexity is better than ChatGPT for researched answers with sources. For a free, no-account option, try Duck.ai; to try many models under one subscription, use Poe.

Claude: the best all-round alternative
Claude, from Anthropic, is the alternative most often recommended for writing that sounds less robotic, for working through long documents and for coding. Paid plans add Claude Code, its coding agent, and agent features that work across your files and Chrome. ChatGPT has more built-in extras, such as image generation, voice and a cheaper $8 Go plan. Pro is $20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly. Our ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini comparison goes deeper.
Google Gemini: best value for Google users
Gemini is built into Gmail, Docs and Android, generates images free with a Google account, and has a deep research mode. Google AI Plus starts at $4.99 a month, and Google AI Pro ($19.99 a month) adds Gemini's background agent and more. If you already pay for Google storage, check whether your plan includes Gemini features before buying anything else.
Microsoft Copilot: best inside Word and Excel
Copilot is free in Windows and the browser. Its paid value comes through Microsoft 365 plans from $9.99 a month, which put AI into Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint. Choose it if most of your work happens in Office documents.
Perplexity: best for researched answers
Perplexity works like a search engine that writes the answer for you, with numbered links to every source. It's the best pick for fact-finding, product research and anything where you need to check the claim. Pro is $20 a month or $200 a year. Its free AI browser, Comet, can also do tasks in your tabs.
