Wispr Flow review and AI dictation apps compared
Short answer
Wispr Flow lets you talk instead of type in any app on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android, and cleans up what you say as it goes. The free plan covers about 2,000 words a week on desktop; Pro removes the cap for $12 a month billed yearly or $15 monthly. Pick Superwhisper instead if you want dictation that runs offline or a one-time lifetime license, and try the free dictation built into your computer first if you only dictate now and then.
AI dictation apps turn speech into finished text: you hold a key, talk, and the app types into whatever box your cursor is in, with punctuation added and filler words removed. Wispr Flow is the best-known of them. This review covers what you get on each Wispr Flow plan and how it compares with the main alternatives, based on each company's pricing, help and privacy pages, checked on the date above.

What Wispr Flow does well
- Works in any app. It types into email, chat, documents and AI chat boxes alike, so you don't need a separate dictation window.
- Cleans up as you talk. Its features page says it removes "um" and "uh", adds punctuation, and keeps the corrected version when you change your mind mid-sentence ("at 2... actually 3").
- Learns your words. Spelling corrections go into a personal dictionary, and snippets expand a spoken shortcut into text you type often, such as an address or a link.
- Every major platform. There are apps for Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android (Android 13 or newer, from Google Play), per its downloads and Android pages.
- Editing by voice. Pro's Command Mode lets you select text and say how to change it.
- A useful free tier. About 2,000 words a week is enough to find out whether you like dictating before you pay.
Privacy and what to know first
Wispr Flow processes your speech in the cloud, so it needs an internet connection and doesn't work offline. Its data controls page says processing happens in the US on AWS. Two settings matter:
- Dictation cloud storage: when it's off, your transcripts and audio aren't kept on Wispr's servers.
- Privacy Mode: this now controls whether your data can be used to train models. It used to mean zero data retention, so older reviews describe it differently.
Any user can accept a HIPAA Business Associate Agreement in Settings, on any plan, which turns off the Notetaker and Scratchpad features (Wispr's HIPAA post). Business buyers should check its enterprise privacy page for the current SOC 2 report.

Superwhisper
Superwhisper's main difference is that it can run speech models on your own computer, so dictation works without internet and your audio doesn't have to leave the machine. The free plan gives unlimited dictation with local Whisper models. Pro adds cloud models, AI formatting, file transcription and unlimited modes, and every paid plan has the same features; you only choose how to pay. The $249.99 lifetime license is the only one-time option here, and it covers unlimited Macs, Windows PCs and phones. Students, educators and non-profits get 40% off.
Willow
Willow costs the same as Wispr Flow ($12 a month billed yearly, $15 monthly) and also types into any app. It has Mac, Windows and iPhone apps, with Android listed as coming soon. Its free plan uses a less accurate speech model than Pro.
Aqua Voice
Aqua Voice is slightly cheaper than Wispr Flow on its pricing page, and students get 70% off. Its free plan is a one-time 1,000 words (about seven minutes of talking), so treat it as a trial. Like Wispr Flow, it processes speech in the cloud.
The free dictation you already have
- Mac: press the Microphone key or the Dictation shortcut (set it in System Settings > Keyboard). Apple says Keyboard settings show whether dictation is processed on your Mac rather than sent to Apple's servers.
- Windows: press Windows key + H in any text box. It needs internet, and its optional fluid dictation fixes grammar and punctuation as you speak.
- Google Docs: Tools > Voice typing, in Chrome, Edge or Safari.
- Chrome: right-click a text box and choose Talk to Type, or press Option + Space on a Mac or Ctrl + Space on Windows, to dictate into any box on a web page.
These don't remove filler words or reformat what you say as well as the paid apps, but they're the right place to start if you dictate a few messages a day.
Dragon, the long-standing dictation software from Nuance, is still sold for Windows (Dragon Professional). It's aimed at professional and business users; check Nuance's store for the current price.
Who should pick which
- Wispr Flow: you want the most polished dictation on every device and don't mind cloud processing. Start on the free plan and pay once you hit the weekly cap.
- Superwhisper: you want dictation that works offline, keeps audio on your computer, or that you can buy once.
- Willow or Aqua Voice: worth a look if Wispr Flow's style doesn't suit you; both cost about the same or slightly less.
- Built-in dictation: you dictate occasionally, or you want to see whether talking instead of typing suits you before paying anything.

Frequently asked questions
How much does Wispr Flow cost?
Wispr Flow has a free plan with about 2,000 words a week on desktop. Pro costs $12 per user a month billed yearly ($144 a year) or $15 billed monthly. Students and educators with a school email get 50% off Pro.
Does Wispr Flow work offline?
No. Wispr Flow's support pages say transcription needs an internet connection. If you need offline dictation, Superwhisper can run local speech models on your own computer, and its free plan includes unlimited local dictation.
Is Wispr Flow private?
It processes speech in the cloud, in the US on AWS. You can turn off cloud storage of your dictations and stop your data being used for training in its Data and Privacy settings, and any user can accept a HIPAA Business Associate Agreement there. Read its privacy page before dictating anything sensitive.
Is there a free alternative to Wispr Flow?
